Resident Responsibilities:

The program allows for progressive acquisition of responsibility. It promotes aspects of patient care that enhance both intellectual and emotional development, while limiting involvement in any significant service responsibilities.

Although there is adequate opportunity to become proficient in all procedures, trained paramedical technicians of the IV therapy team, respiratory therapy department, heart station and laboratory phlebotomy team efficiently perform routine procedures in their respective areas.

First year residents are responsible for the initial evaluation and day-to-day care of patients on their service, with close supervision by the team's second or third year resident and the attending physician. First year residents also play an important role teaching third year medical students who rotate through their service.

Second and third year residents act as team leaders, supervisors and teachers for the first year residents and for the third and four year medical students who rotate through the various services.

Team Composition:

Patient care teams on the inpatient internal medicine services generally are composed of one supervising second or third year resident, one first year resident, one fourth year medical student sub-intern, one third year medical student, and an assigned attending physician.
