An outstanding medical library at St. Mary's, under
the direction of a full-time medical librarian, maintains more than
1,000 current books and subscribes to more than 200 medical journals.
The library staff, who assist with copying, also provide faculty and
housestaff with on-site, computerized bibliographic search and retrieval
services. Housestaff are trained in computerized literature searching
and have 24-hour access to their own terminals in the library, in the
Internal Medicine Housestaff Lounge, and on all Nursing Units. Housestaff also have access to web-based expert programs and on-line
medical textbooks such as Up-to-Date. Palm-based handheld
devices are required and a $1000 technology stipend is available to all
PGY-1 Categorical Residents. Housestaff are taught to be computer
literate, and are expected to utilize computer technology in both their
education and their practice.
In addition, housestaff have access to the medical
school libraries of St. Louis University and Washington University.
